Elections

The CNC is made up of twenty-three (23) representatives of which eight (8) are precinct representatives, one for each of the eight Ward 2 voting precincts; eight (8) are at-large representatives, elected by the all precincts in Ward Two; and seven (7)  are non-profit representatives. All neighborhood council representatives are elected to 3 year terms.

This page serves as a resource for the Charlestown community to stay up to date with all upcoming elections. We will be updating this page for the 2023 at-large representative election.

2023 At-large Election Update:

Seven (7) candidates submitted their Nominations Forms by the deadline for the eight (8) open CNC At-Large seats so there will not be an election on December 2nd.  On November 9, 2023, the council voted unanimously to seat all 7 candidates listed below at the January 2024 meeting for a three year term running from January 2024 - December 2026. Congratulations!

Thank you to the candidates for your interest in the council, for caring about the well-being of the community, and for getting involved. Candidates for the 8th seat are asked to bring their Nomination Forms to the December 7th meeting of the council where the council will vote on who will fill the final open seat.

Elections by class:

  • At-large seats: election November 2023, seated January 2024, term Jan 2024- Dec 2026

  • Precinct seats: election November 2024, seated January 2025, term Jan 2025-Dec 2027

  • Non-Profit seats: reconfirmed November 2025, seated January 2026, term Jan 2026-Dec 2028

AT-LARGE ELECTION
December  2023 

All  eight (8) at-large council seats will be up for election in December 2023 for a three year term that starts in January 2024.  All residents of Charlestown who are 18 or older are eligible to cast a vote in at-large elections. Residents may vote for up to eight of the candidates listed on the ballot, without regard to which precinct the voter or the candidate live in. The eight (8) candidates who garner the most votes will be elected to the council.

Special Election
February 4, 2023 

This special election was called to fill these seven (7) seats:

Precinct

5 Precinct seats (precincts 3,4,6,7, and 8) that are one year into a three-year term which will end December 31, 2024.

 Only precinct residents are eligible to cast a vote in their respective precinct election.

At-Large

2 At-Large Seats that are two years into a three-year term which will end

December 31, 2023. All residents of Charlestown are eligible to cast a vote in at-large elections.

The Precinct 7 seat remains open after the Special Election.

Thank you, Charlestown for a strong showing at the Special Election on Saturday, February 4th! Approximately 338 residents showed up to vote for their candidates. We would also like to extend a special thank you to all the volunteers who helped staff the polls and all the candidates who stepped forward to ask all of you for a chance to work on behalf of our neighborhood.

With so many excellent candidates, Charlestown was going to be the big winner in this election - no matter the outcome! Please join us in welcoming our new neighborhood council members:

New council members will be seated Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the CNC meeting which will take place from 7-9 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 545 Medford St., Charlestown, MA 02129.

Please join us at our council meetings this year! Meetings are generally the first Tuesday of the month, from 7-9 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus in Charlestown. The council is on hiatus in July & August.

Candidates

For all residents who wish to run for the Charlestown Neighborhood Council, please read the below qualifications, and then navigate to and follow the steps in the respective Nomination Form and Instructions

Precinct

 A candidate for precinct representative must:

  • be a Charlestown resident over the age of 18 years old;

  • reside in the precinct that they are seeking to represent;

  • complete the information requested on the candidate certification form, including certifying that the candidate has never had a felony conviction or guilty plea;

  • gather at least 25 valid signatures from people who are 18 or older as of the date they

  • sign the nomination papers and who have a valid residential address in the precinct that the candidate is seeking to represent; and

  • return the nomination papers by the deadline.

At-Large

 A candidate for at-large representative must:

  • be a Charlestown resident over the age of 18 years old;

  • complete the information requested on the certification form, including certifying that
    the candidate has never had a felony conviction or guilty plea;

  • gather at least 25 valid signatures from people who are 18 years old or older as of the
    date they sign the nomination papers and who have a valid residential address in
    Charlestown; and

  • return the nomination papers by the deadline.
